The BEST Cheeseburger on Nantucket!

The snow’s flying and I’m dreaming of cheeseburgers on the grill…hot, tasty, juicy! If I could shovel my way to the grill, that would be tonight’s dinner…but right now it’s looking like it’ll be months before I see the top of my grill again!

Since Nantucket is always on my mind as I prepare for the 2011 season, I thought I’d share with you my top three favorite burgers on the island (drum roll…)!

Third Place:
LoLa 41: Cabot Cheddar Cheese, Red Onion Compote, Foie Gras Dipping Sauce — wonderful restaurant, great bar, fun people! lola41.com
$19-

Second Place:
Surfside Beach Snack Shack: Large, scrumptious, and juicy, and only $6 with lettuce and tomato! (And the scenery can’t be beat!)
$6-

FIRST PLACE:
Nashaquisset – “Guest Burgers” abound during the season as we gather around the pool. The village ambience cannot be beat!
$Priceless!

Do YOU have a favorite burger on Nantucket? Let me know!

Four-letter words: snow vs. sand!

All right. We live in the Northeast and it IS January … so how can we complain about the impending snow storm that threatens to wreak havoc this week?

Complain we shall…but I prefer to think of another ‘four letter word’: sand! Sand between my toes, in my sandwich, stuck to my legs, everywhere in the car, clinging to my beach towel…sand sand sand! The beaches of Nantucket are in my dreams: Surfside, Ladies, Cisco — every Nantucket beach holds its own charm.

And today, shivering as I throw the snow scraper into the car and stop at the grocery store for a few staples, I dream of sand…sun…seashore…shells…shorts…sandals.

Ah….summer! You can’t come soon enough!

If you’re dreaming of a summer vacation, come visit us at Nashaquisset on Nantucket … there’s nothing better!

Renting a Nantucket Vacation Home: When to Book?

There are many things to consider when renting a vacation house on Nantucket: location, budget, amenities, transportation…and supply and demand.

Like most everything else, the best of Nantucket home inventory goes first. Bookings start as soon as people leave from the previous season, and in September we’re writing leases for the following year. In January, people come back from spending the holidays together and making family vacation plans, so there are many homes claimed then. By May and June, it’s more difficult to get the house you want for the weeks you want.

So when should you book your vacation home? Right now!

Here at Nashaquisset, our homeowners adhere to vigorous maintenance and furnishings standards so you’re assured of consistent quality. Our pool and tennis courts are meticulously maintained, and our neighborhood landscaping is beautiful. I’m here all summer long to make sure any problems that come up are addressed quickly; after all, YOU should be at the beach — not waiting for a plumber to arrive!

Take a look at our homes (www.nashaquisset.com) and book your favorite now — summer will be here before you know it!

Christmas on Nantucket…strolling is good for the soul!

Carolers in Victorian costumes, bell ringers, student choirs and other musicians performed on Main Street…Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived via a Coast Guard vessel and rode up Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage…magically decorated Christmas Trees featured special ornaments created by numerous charity groups, merchants, and families. Nantucket this past weekend was magic!

My first Christmas Stroll…yet another reason to love Nantucket, as if its beaches, natural havens, and wildlife weren’t enough to draw one back to the island in the off-season. So lovely to be here in the quiet of winter: deserted beaches, parking spaces galore (!), a rhythm that has slowed to a gentle pace.

Rejuvenating, indeed, while preparing for the summer season here at Nashaquisset!

Cookouts at the pool…Nantucket style!

A tradition began this summer at Nashaquisset: Tuesday night cookouts for our guests during July and August. No need to cook after a day at the beach or riding bikes –burgers and dogs, beer and lemonade, brownies and watermelon rivaled Nantucket’s renowned restaurants! Kids and their families lounged on the sundeck and splashed in the pool until the sun set; a neighborhood party just like the good ol’ days! And some of our very talented younger guests serenaded us with song and music (four proficient violinists ages 5 – 11!); what a wonderful way to spend summer evenings.

From Mountain Majesties to Shining Sea: Nashaquisset is My New World!

This past June I packed my car, boarded the ferry, and sailed 30 miles from Hyannis to Nantucket. I was a Pilgrim, going from the old world (Wyoming) to the new world (Nantucket); from mountain majesties to shining sea, this would be home for the next four months. I’d been to the island just once before — many years ago — but a new job at Nashaquisset would tether me to this beautiful island for all of summer. What to expect?!

Nashaquisset…the island’s best kept vacation secret…would keep me busier than I ever could imagine. Ninety homes built almost 20 years ago evoke the quintessential Nantucket: town homes and cottages along shell paths and brick sidewalks, privet hedges and picket fences…all in a neighborhood that is close to town and beaches. If I couldn’t have my beautiful Big Horn Mountains, I now had something equally as wonderful: all of Nantucket’s beaches, warmed by the Gulf Stream.

Summer flew by as vacationing families checked in, checked out. So many people, questions, requests, fun! Lots of work, but so gratifying. I look forward to sharing with you some of the “island’s best” over the winter…come back and visit soon!
